The links below are to some of my favorite websites featuring haunted attractions; famous Horror authors, artists and personalities; Halloween events and pages; and other examples of the field of Dark Fantasy.

Each site is rated for family-friendliness, but the images and contents of some pages are meant for mature viewers. Parental discretion is always advised when exploring the World Wide Web.

So you think you're a Lovecraft fan? Know everything there is to know about the Grand Master from Providence ? How about who was President while Lovecraft was writing his tales? Checked out books from the Orne Library using Randolph Carter's card? Heard any good Amphibian Band music lately? Cthulhu Lives! is the website of The H P Lovecraft Historical Society , or, as they put it themselves, "An Alternate Universe Since 1984!" Ostensibly a spinoff site for the "Call Of Cthuhlu" game from Miskatonic River Press, the site contains cell phone downloads, prop document templates, jazz music, radio drama, links to Lovecraft-inspired or adapted films, news reports that reflect Mr. Lovecraft's worldview, and, as the announcers say, so much more!

If you're in the mood for the sort of music you'll find on your annual Halloween party CD, you can't do better than HalloweenRadio.Net and HalloweenRadio.Com Both are excellent sources of music for your October errands. These webcasts feature a large variety of what may be considered “Halloween-esque,” and have included everything from Crash Test Dummies "The Ghosts That Haunt Me," to Concrete Blonde's "Bloodletting," to Camille Saint-Saens' "Danse Macabre," to Jerry Goldsmith's "Theme From Poltergeist," as well as spoken word performances by Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and other Horror personalities. There is overlap on both stations; the choice is yours!

Formed in 2006 to present the best of independent Horror, Science Fiction and Dark Fantasy in the Washington DC area, THE SPOOKY MOVIE FILM FESTIVAL has grown into one of the premiere film events in the industry, with many of its features picked up for major distribution. It has also garnered international attention and screens several foreign efforts for it's blood-soaked audience, and has featured productions by Steve Nile (30 DAYS OF NIGHT), H. G. Lewis (BLOOD FEAST) and award-winning animator Bill Plympton. I'm very proud of the work my friend C. W. Prather has put into his event, and want to draw it to your attention so you might plan your October accordingly! You can check their updated schedule and get more information by logging onto www.spookyfests.com.

From 1976 until 1984, Brigantine Castle on the boardwalk pier in Brigantine, NJ was a Halloween lovers dream: a year-round haunted attraction that featured live performers as well as animated and mechanical effects. No one who lived in the Tri-Sate Area during the late 1970s can forget the spooky, enticing commercials played on local television stations, inviting one and all to "the scare of a lifetime!" Alas, the castle is long gone, a victim of financial hardships and finally a huge fire that destroyed the structure in 1987. But it still lives on in the hearts of locals that loved the towering, imposing structure at the end of the Seahorse Pier. BRIGANTINE CASTLE ONLINE traces the history of this dark summer attraction, with lots of photos and films of the commercials. Click HERE for all the information you'll need. (And while you're there, check out the other pages of www.darkinthepark.com, a listing of the best haunted attractions in the Garden State and their histories!)

The short story can have a compressed power that a novel cannot equal; one reviewer called Stephen King's shorts “Hit-and-Run Horror”. In the same way a short film can pack a punch the best feature has to struggle to earn. Drew Daywalt and the filmmakers behind Daywalt Fear Factory understand this implicitly, and work their artistry like the sharp stab of an icepick. Aspiring filmmakers could do far worse than to study their abbreviated efforts, and I commend their work to you without reservation. Be warned: these nightmares are not for the faint-of heart!

One of the best events I have ever attended year upon year, MONSTER BASH is held outside of Pittsburgh PA every June. It is a family-friendly event (indeed, it encourages the participation of youngsters and their parents) that celebrates the classic horrors of the Universal Monster rallies featuring Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolf Man, The Phantom Of The Opera, The Creature From The Black Lagoon, and the entire zoology of radiated scorpions, shuffling zombies, disembodied spectres and maniacal scientists meddling in God's domain. You can also find these denizens of yesterday in the film selections of MONSTER BASH's sponsor, CREEPY CLASSICS . Click onto the banner above for information on each!

What to know everything there is to know about FRANKENSTEIN ? You don't? Why not? Did you know that this novel, written by a 19-year-old girl, is the most adapted piece of literature of all time? (Surpassing even the Bible?) That diverse actors from Colin Clive and Boris Karloff to Kenneth Branagh and Robert De Niro have had a hand at playing the Doctor and his Creation? If you're fascinated with the literary, cinematic, dramatic and artistic lineage of one of the classic works of Horror and Dark Fantasy, you might want to peruse "Frakensteinia" , the all-Frankenstein-all-the-time Rondo Award nominated blog. (And a very loud thank-you to actor/writer/director/artist Mark Redfield ( DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE ) for pointing me in its direction!)

We often think of “HorrorHosts” as the figures introducing bad movies on independent television stations But the original HorrorHosts began generations before, with legendary figures such as Arch Obler, The Whistler, The Witch, and The Phantom Stranger introducing chilling tales on classic radio series such as “Lights Out” and “Inner Sanctum” . The website radiohorrorhosts.com collects all the information you could possibly want on the Hosts, the shows, the controversies, and includes actual programs from the era. Turn off he lights, pull up a chair, turn your computer up loud and prepare to be scared!

It's only appropriate that during December we would honor (or that should really be honour ) the creator of one of the finest Christmas Ghost Stories of all time. (And I should point out that his other ghost stories, such as “The Signalman” and "The Story of the Goblins Who Stole a Sexton” are no slouches either, and much of his work, such as Magwitch's appearance in the graveyard at the opening of GREAT EXPECTATIONS show a finely developed sense of the macabre.) This exhaustive site will give you everything you've ever wanted to know about the life and literary efforts of the creator of Marley' Ghost!

Are you searching for that classic musical motif for your Halloween celebration? Look no further than Kristen Lawrence! Her original and adapted music for the October Season begs comparison with the lush sound of The October Project. Her work is whimsical and macabre, distinctly mining the traditional holiday sounds of Christmas carols for a darker effect. Give a listen (one of my favorites is the full length "Ghost Of John") and enjoy the ambiance of All Hallow's Eve!

Look to any poll taken during Halloween of the best haunted attractions in the United States , and you'll probably find Netherworld within the list's top five. And for good reason: Netherworld is an extraordinary collection of actors, stuntman, makeup artists, special effects technicians, stage and film directors, and October Season enthusiasts that come together to create a terrifying, overwhelming, delightfully frightening extravaganza of live performance and animatronic mastery! If you're planning a trip this year to celebrate the season, you can do no better than to enjoy the 'hospitality' of the Netherworld cast and crew. Six years after his masterwork THE TWILIGHT ZONE left the airwaves, Rod Serling was back a series whose concept was something entirely new to television: an anthology series with individual segments anthologized as well. NIGHT GALLERY was never the success that TWILIGHT ZONE was, due in part to studio interference of Mr. Serling's creative talents and truly horrendous decisions made when presenting the series to syndication. Nevertheless, NIGHT GALLERY was a concept ahead of its time, and some segments contain some of Mr. Serling's finest work, including his Emmy-nominated classic "They're Tearing Down Tim Riley's Bar" . This website contains literally everything you possibly want to know about the series, including reproductions of the paintings used in each episode. Step into the main exhibition room; disregard the Gift Shop; sadly, it's closed, and Mr. Serling has moved on. But the NIGHT GALLERY remains.

A glorious gathering of supernatural creatures, international bands and more magic in a weekend than you might find in…well, a Celtic faerieland, I suppose; Faerieworlds is the brainchild of Brian Froud, world-renowned fantasy artist probably most famous for his work on the films DARK CRYSTAL and LABRYNTH . A three day outdoor family celebration of music and merriment, the event takes place outside Eugene , OR . There are street performers in the vendor's village, a main stage with acts from Europe , fire dancers to light the midnight hour, and costumed creations to overflow your imagination. I hope to see many, if not all of you there!
